Variation of Longitudinal Modulus with Twist for Yarns Composed of High Modulus Fibers.

Researchers used a sonic pulse propagation method to examine variations in longitudinal moduli with twist for twisted yarns and twisted yarn/resin composites composed of fibers with a range of tensile moduli. An increase in twist reduced the longitudinal modulus of a twisted yarn composed of fibers with low tensile modulus in accord with the cos(2)-alpha model. The reduction in longitudinal modulus of yarns featuring high modulus fibers was abrupt and deviated from the cos(2)-alpha model. A filaments described the relationship between the longitudinal modulus of twisted yarns and twist angle. Experimental data confirmed the model for twisted yarns and twisted yarn/resin composites. 4 refs.
