Basic false twist yarn texturing twists a yarn to its maximum extent, sets the twist by heating and cooling, and untwists the set yarn. Filaments in the yarn snarl into pigtails to relieve the torque, which results in high yarn contraction and recovery. Continuous polymerization, high speed winding, and air jet interlacing have reduced the number of steps in yarn twisting from three to one. Single heater false twist texturing imparts elasticity to nylon yarns. Set, double heater false twist texturing imparts high bulk and low stretch to polyester yarns. Hot fluid jet texturing imparts high bulk and low stretch to bulk continuous filament yarns used in carpet manufacturing. Maximum speeds for false twist texturing are approximately 1,000 meters per minute. Steam setting methods used in the FibreM process applied to false twist texturing, as well as more rapid cooling methods, reduce the length of the texturing zone and permit increases in speed without surging.
