A bundle of thin and long bodies may be assembled into a single elongated yarn of specified length if the fibers in the bundle overlap in a staggered configuration so that tensional forces are transmitted from fiber to fiber and thus distributed within the bundle, and the number of individual fibers is large enough to ensure that discontinuity in force due to fiber ends does not weaken the yarn. The assessment of fiber arrangement in a yarn requires that the yarn be inspected as it comes off the bobbin and not flattened on glass; the depth of focus of the microscope be 2-4 millimeters; and the yarn be turned on its axis for inspection while kept under slight tension. Comparison of classic ring spun yarn, compact spun yarn, open end spun yarn, and two for one ring spun yarn revealed differences in their structural properties.
