Predicting the Nep Number in Cotton Yarn -- Determining the Critical Nep Size

Researchers determined the critical nep size above which neps register as Uster testing machine yarn defects. The study assumed that yarn neps had a spherical shape. A model calculated critical nep size for cotton ring spun and open end spun yarns, and tests confirmed model results. The average size of neps larger than the critical size was variable and decreased with increasing yarn linear density. Open end spun yarns had fewer neps per 1,000 meters than did ring spun yarns. Ring spun critical nep size predicted the nep number in cotton yarns from the roving neppiness properties determined by the Advanced Fiber Instrument System testing machine. 12 refs.
