Continued risk assessment is necessary to ensure environmental quality. Risks posed by soap and detergent products continue to be a concern of and challenge for the industrial community. The denger of phosphates to water quality is well documented, and efforts to reduce phosphate pollution are ongoing. The soap and detergent industry is looking for alternatives to animal testing to determine eye irritability. Additional and emerging concerns for the 1990s include the environmental effects of solvents and heavy metals used in household products and the disposal of soap and detergent packaging.
