Importance of Testing of Textiles to Eco-Standard Specifications.

The German textile industry has identified more than 8,000 chemicals that are regularly used for the production and processing of fabrics. The textile industry is voluntarily advocating eco-standards, which encourage consumers to buy environmentally friendly products. Two types of eco-standard labels are planned for textile products sold in Germany. The first type of label sets norms for productions processes and analyzes processing conditions with respect to the degree of air, water, and soil pollution. The second type of label sets norms for consumer goods and indicates the content of such pollutants as pesticides, heavy metals, pentachlorophenol, and benzidine based dyestuffs. 11 refs.
