Aratex Services, an industrial laundry in Portland, Oregon, invested $1 million in a wastewater treatment system. The system, which processes 240,000 gallons of wastewater per day, effectively eliminates solvents, lead, and nonpolar fats, oils, and greases from its discharge stream. The system puts the facility in compliance with the revised local wastewater ordinance and eliminates the need for the city to treat the discharge. The revised ordinance lowered the discharge levels for such chemicals as chlorinated hydrocarbons and lead. Prior to the installation of the system, Aratex had been out of compliance with the revised ordinance. The system consists of a shaker screen, equalization tank, mixer, and skimmer or dissolved air flotation tank.
