The degradability of organic substrates provides the basis for a method used by Ecologica Aqqlicata to determine the capacity for removal of a chemical formula containing surfactants by a biological system of activated sludge. To test its method, Ecologica Applicata conducted batch trials to evaluate the degradability of a proportional mix of seven CHT products. It then tested the results under controlled conditions using a biological activated sludge installation. A solution containing 12,350 milligrams per liter of COD and 1,920 milligrams per liter of BiAS proved degradable. Results showed that 90 percent of the COD and 98-99 percent of the BiAS degraded, and that the solution was nontoxic to microorganisms populating the activated sludge. 6 refs.
