Stringent environmental legislation has stimulated efforts to remove color from dyehouse effluent. Some dyes are of synthetic origin and resist degradation by conventional waste treatment methods. These dyes exhibit stability to light, oxidzing agents, and aerobic digestion. The primary decolorization methods developed during the past 20 years include membrane filtration, electrokinetic coagulation, ion exchange, adsorption techniques, and the application of a surfactant to preciptate the dyes from the effluent. None of these treatments have met with commercial success because of high implementation costs, low efficiency, and inapplicability to a variety of dyes. 24 refs.
