The history of Madder Red (or Trudey Red) dyes, and the dyeing process involved, are traced fro their origins in the Near East, via developments in France, to attempts to master the process in Manchester and Glasgow in 1781-1785. Alum was found to be an effective mordant, but it was established that the six stages of oiling, mordanting, fixing, dyeing, steaming and cleaning were required. The dyeing is examined in relation to cotton.
