The British textile finishing industry enjoyed healthy growth during the first six months of 1993. Output in the finishing sector for the second quarter of 1993 increased more than 5 percent compared with the same quarter of 1992. Finishing output is increasing faster in the United Kingdom than in any other European Union (EU) country, but Great Britain still ranks third behind Italy and Germany in total volume of production. Environmental problems pose the greatest threat to continued growth of the British finishing industry. Such problems are especially acute in the Leicestershire region, where there is a high incidence of reactive dye use.
