Prior to the introduction of manmade dyes, the major sources of colorants for textiles were from animals and plants. The roots, leaves, flowers stems, bark, and branches of some plants produced red, blue, and yellow dyes. Dyers extracted a red dye from some scale insects. Some sea snails provided purple and blue dyes noted in the Bible and used in the ceremonial apparel worn by royalty and priests. High performance liquid chromatography is able to identify a variety of these dyes extracted from ancient textiles. Abstract.
