Use of Near Infrared Reflectance Analysis (NIRA) in Dye Quality Control.

Color measurement determines the conformance of samples to customer tolerances. One method of determining color deviations involves a visual comparison by a trained colorist of dyed and conditioned fabric swatches with an internal company standard. The subjectivity of the colorist's judgment, however, causes inconsistencies. The amount of time spent dyeing and conditioning fabric swatches also decreases the efficiency of this method. NIRA easily and quickly determines sample colors once calibration data sets have been developed. An experiment illustrates the utility of NIRA by evaluating color deviations in different batches of Tectilon Red 2B acid dye. 16 refs.
