An experiment used p-NMR spectroscopy to quantitatively determine the distribution of EO oligomer adducts in n-alcohol ethoxylates. The researchers added one dorp of n-alcohol ethoxylate to a NMR tube containing 0.5 milliliter of deuterated chloroform. Key parameters for the proton scan were: time domain, 16k; nomber of scans, 16; proton pulse width, 30 degrees; acquisition and delay times, 9 seconds; spectral line boradening, 1 hertz; and receiver gain, maximum. the researchers established a baseline for calibration by averaging data from ten repetitive analysis of hexaethylene glycon mono n-dodecyl ether. Results indicated that p-NMR spectroscopy accurately characterized the distribution of EO oligomers in linear n-alcohol ethoxylates. Branched n-alcohol ethoxylates, however, produced spurious data. 6 refs.
