Pragmatic waste minimization strategies offer the textile dyer the ability to address environnmntal concerns and maintain profits. A study of waste minimization in the dyehouse compares the enviromnetal impact of printing and several dyeing processes-batc, semicontinuous, and continuous. The analysis segregates costs by process, including total energy and water use, preparing dyestuffs and chemical auxiliaries, shade reproduction, redyeing, and effluent treatment. Savings from simple changes in existing procedures, such as ensuring a high level of right-firsto-time production or adopting batch dyeing procedures at the lowest possible liquor ratio, can be significant enough to allow textile dyers to upgrade their effluent treatment systems without reallocating future capital expenditures or dipping into profits. 6 refs.
