Researchers at North Carolina State University College of Textiles discovered that chitin removes color from wastewater at textile dyeing facilities. k bulk powdered form of chitin, which is polymer derived from crab sheels, acts as a filter in a laboratory decolorization module. The chitin absorbs up to 20 percent of its weight in dye. At $120 a ton, the cost of chitin is very low. Applications for the charged chitin include packaging materials and commercial fuel logs.
