Mercerization of cotton weft knit fabrics increases cotton-dyestuff affinity, there by reducing dyestuff consumption, and improves the perceived quality and technical characteristics of the fabrics. Over the past 15 years, Kornier has provided more than 230 mercerizing machines for tubular knit fabrics. Its system of stepless adjustable circular expanders offers improved dimensional stability, mark-free and crease-free selvages, uniform and reproducible treatment, and significant dyestuff savings. Sperotto's Rimar MT-15 mercerization plant comprises three main units: an impregnation tank, a stabilization/reduction tower, and a washing/rinsing tower. Its automatic self cleaning filters maximize washing performance and efficient water usage. Brazzoli's MCT/1200 mercerization plant comprises an inlet arrangement, caustic soda vat, reaction section, stabilizing/washing section, and exit. Ramisch Kleinewefers' Trikoflex 2000 mercerization plant is designed to handle the increasing demand for equipment that provides gentler treatment and operates at lower tension levels. Mercerization equipment made by EVAC, A. Monforts, and Santex, and shrinking and compacting equipment by Brazzoli and Sperotto are also discussed.
