An examination of the effects of dyeing conditions on the dyeing of polyester ad cationic dyeable polyester focused on water hardness and total dissolved solids. Water hardness adversely affected the color of polyester dyed with disperse dyes and cationic dyeable polyester dyedd with cationic dyes. The effects were stronger in the latter case. As water hardness increased, dye strength decreased signficanly with the cationic dyes and slightly with the disperse dyes. Ion exchange was optimal for softening the water because the increase in totoal dissolved solids was less with this process than with adding water softeners. However, an increae in total dissolved solids after softening affected the color of both fabric types. 8 refs.
