Ciba-Geigy collaborated with Demaurex Robotigue and Microtechnique to develop the Aladys Automated Laboratory Dyeing System because of the high volume of sample dyeings performed in its laboratory. The objectives were to improve the accuracy and precision o fthe dyeigns, decrease time and costs, and increase flexibility in operations. A computer controls all process parameters, from sample preparation to sample delivery. Critical automated components are a unit that dispenses dyes and chemicals in powdered form and a winding unit that controls tension and weight per square meter. The storage unit for dyes and chemicals comprises 720 containers for posders and granules and 240 containers for liquids. The dyeing system comproses 84 dyeign units, each of which is autonomous and consists of two 500 milliliter cylinders. One of the cylinders is the dyeing autoclave and the other serves as the add tank or reserve liquor vessel.
