To remain competitive in the international market, india's textile dyers will have to modernize their machinery and implement right-first-time (RFT) production methods, especially for batchwise dyeing of cotton knit goods. In India, cotton knit goods continue to be winch dyed. This method consumes tremendous amounts of water, dyestuffs, and other chemicals. Dyers must invest in machines that operate with short and ultrashort liquor ratios, feature automatic metering of dyestuffs, and are microprocessor controlled. They also must achieve better reproducibility and minimize redyeing. This approach will reduce labor costs and the consumption of energy, water, and chemicasl. The role of India's laboratiories must be expanded to include research on dye dispensing, selection of dyestuffs, and coordination and involvement of all aspects of dyeing. 8 refs.
