The history and developemtn of dyeing and the dyeing industry during the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centureis in the United States are reviewed. Three principle operations are considered: dyeing preparation, color application, and finishing. The technology of the typical dyehouse and the types of dyes and chemicals used are discussed. Methodsl used for process and quality control are descried. Finally, the social status, professional standing, and common business practices of the early Americal dyer are reviewed. 50 refs.
