Federal environmental agencies are directing increased attention toward the effluents discharged by textile mills. Regulations are concerned with four basic problems: color in effluent, trace quantities of heavy metals, high concentrations of dissolved salts, and low biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)/chemical oxygen demand(COD) ratios. Most textile mills discharge effluent to publlcly owned treatment works (POTW). Some POTWs receiving textile dyeing wastewater are having difficulties meeting their discharge permit limits. This situation has focused attention on technologles to improve the quality of effluents from textile mills.
