Experimenters constructed a simple apparaturs to simulate the continuous washing of fabric in an open width wasing machine. The apparatus consisted of a linishing solution tank, vertically stacked pressure rollers, and a conductivity sensor. The rollers simulated the action of various washing compattments while the conductivity sensor monitored fluctuations in the lectrolytic potential of moveing fabric samples. The apparatus quantified the effects of parameters influencing energy consumption during washing--fabric speed, roler pressure, bath concentraion, bath temperature, flow rate, and evaporation rate--more easily and rapidly than empirical field testing. Validation experiments in a mill showed that applying data from the simulation significantly reduced process operating costs. 3 refs.
