Dryer limited backcoaters were retrofitted with radio frequency (RF) overns and used in ocnjunciton with existing convection ovesn to dry latex adhesive backing on tufted carpet. the RF overs were tested in both precheating and postheating configurations. RF precheating was the desired configuration because it eliminated the heating peroid before reaching a maximum drying rate in the convection oven. Precheating also increased the average convection drying rate Precheating required a shorter RF oven lenght, which reduced the payback period for investment in backcoater modifications. 16 refs.
