Ciba-Geigy, in conjunction with Demeurex, recently developed ALADYS (Automated LAboratory Dyeing System) for the batch examination of exhaust dyes. ALADYS has three main components: a preparation unit coupled with a flexible beam winding mechanism that can handle 20 different fabric substrates; a dyebath preparation unit capable of dispensing up to 960 different solid dyes, liquid dyes, or auxiliaries; and a dyeing line made up of no less than 84 modules, each with its own preparation tank and set of controls. ALADYS also contains its own network of 12 personal computers and 300 micorprocessors. Sixteen robots perform all material manipulations. According to Ciba-Geigy, ALADYS can perform up to 250 dyeing s per 12 hour shift.
