A paper by Warren J. Jasper demonstrates how neural networks can predict dye concentrations during continuous dyeing. Cumulative back propagtion is a commonly used neural network analysis technique that yields a complex functionasl relationship between input and output parameters. The number of weight s and bias wights in the neural network determines the number of degrees of freedom. This letter maintains that accurate predictions are possible only if the experimenter ensures that the amount of experimental data is significantly greater than the degrees of freedom. 3 refs.
