The dyeing industry uses steam for a variety of functions ranging from heating to power generation. Its major advantage is flexibility. Regulation of temperature and pressure, and system alterations and additions, limited only by the maximum capacity of the mains, are easy. Controlling the steam at optimum levels is critical to achieving a balance between satisfactory processing conditions and minimum use of energy to elimination waste. Steam meters are essential to this control. The elimination of energy waste depends on such factors as pipe maintenance a defficient pipe system design. Thermostatic control is necessary to minimize heat demand. Methods to conserve steam include deaeration of the feed water, monitoring steam traps, automatic blow down control, and condensate return and purity systems.
