During the pad-dry-fixation of cellulosic fabrics, dye migration occurs during intermediate drying. An experiment evaluated the relationship between migration, the water retention capacity of the cellulosic fabric, liquor application, and the conditions existing during both wet and dry processing. Dye migration was independent of the substrate and pretreatment. The most critical factor was the moisture content of the fabric after padding (liquor application), followed by the water retention capacity. Only when the moisture content was above the water retention capacity did migration occur, Controlling dye migration required the measurement and corelation of both these values, particularly because of the variability in the water retention capacity of cellulosic fabrics. 25 refs.
