The textile industry consumes about 90,000 tons of dyes per year, mostly disperse dyes, to dye polyester. Disperse dyes based on teh azo chromophore dominate the market. Continuous or themosol dyeing is used for blends of polyester and cellulosic fibers. Exhaust batch dyeing is used for polyester and its blends with wool. A more recently developed technology involoves dyeing in supercritical carbon dioxide, which has major advantages relative to water and energy consumption and evironmental safety. The use of dyeing assistants is critical to dyeing polyester. The most important function of these additives is to disperse and distribute the dye uniformly. Other additives enable dye migration, solubilize the dyes, or protect the dyed fiber against aging caused by heat or ultraviolet light.
