The adoption of an Automated Laboratory Dyeing System (Aladys) by Ciba (Switzerland) is reviewed. The system was developed to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of dyeings in the company's laboratory. Software and hardware aspects of the system are described. Ways in which the precise winding of textile material and accurate dispensing and dyeing are achieved are outlined.
