This study compares some applications fo formic and acetic acid in the textile industry. the tests showed no significant differences between the acids used when the tests were carried out under the same pH conditions. The results of the tests also show that the same pH valus (below 4.0) can be obtained using at least half as much 85％ formic acid as 80％ acetic acid, owing to the higher dissociation constant of the formic acid. Used as described above, the enviromental impact of the smaller amounts of formic acid used would be less than of acetic acid. Moreover formci acid has a lower BOD than acetic acid. These properties are strone arguments in favour of using formic acid in the textile industry, as an effective, economical and ecological alternative to acetic acid.
