The United States Army is researching the application of adaptive color mechanisms to uniforms to help them visually mimic their surroundings instantly and automatically. Automatic camouflage systems currently under investigation include synthetic silks that imitate the color changing properties of chameleons and light sensitive sensors that modify the reflected wavelength of fabric. The Army has also examined the electrosphore technology used in computer screens, in which electrically charged colored particles suspended in a liquid dye are placed between two plastic films treated with conductive coatings. Depending on the type of electric field applied, the films assume either the color of the particles or the color of the dye.
