Research into the source reduction of pollutants from textile processing wastewater involved studies of the use of ozone to decolorize dyebath water, the decolorization of dyes with ultraviolet (UV) light and hydrogen peroxide, filtration, singlet oxygen bleaching of cotton, and the electrochemical removal of color from reactive dyeing wastewater. The ozonation studies showed that the rate limiting factor was the interface between the gas and the liquid. Oxidation with peroxide and UV light was an effective color removal method. Filtration studies on water from bleaching and dye waste showed that microfiltration removed very small particles, including electrolytes. Singlet oxygen produced by mixtures of hypochlorite and peroxide or by microwave irradiation of oxygen resulted in significant color loss in unbleached cotton, which may be a basis for a zero effluent bleaching process. 13 refs.
