Researchers at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory have investigated two approaches to removing and recovering toxic metals from dyes in textile wastewater. One approach reacted or destroyed the organic fraction of the dyes and released the metals to make them amenable to such conventional separation techniques as ion exchange. Rapid Thermal Decomposition of precursors in Solution effectively destroyed color and released the metals. Corona discharge effectively destroyed color, but did not sufficiently release the metals to allow recovery with a chelating agent. The second approach to metal removal from dye wastewater used ultrafiltration membranes to separate and recover the metal containing dyes for subsequent reuse.
