A test method developed by the Association of Textile Technology (ATTS) in Japan evaluated the combined perspiration fastness and lightfastness of azo reactive dyes on cotton fabrics. The experiment also compared ATTS test results with results obtained using conventional lightfastness tests. Reactive azo dyes contiaining an H-acid or K-acid azo chromophore performed better in conventional lightfastness test. Reactive azo dyes containing a J-acid or gamma-acid chromophore exhibitied a higher fastness in the ATTS combined perspiration and lightfastness test. The experiment suggested that dye fading due to the combined actions of light and perspiration involoves a photoreduction mechanism, but fading under light only involves photooxidation. 16 refs.
