Recent developments in the chemical processing of cotton fabrics in India are being driven by environmental concerns. Envirnmental guidelines are a component of the ISO 9000 standards, and adherence to environmentally responsible production methods is likely to become a prerequisite for export to Europe. New production processes seek to limit the amount of harmful substances exported on fabrics. and to reduce the air, water, and noise pollution generated during production. The pressure to develop environmentally responsible procustion processes is especially strong for such fabric treatments as desizing, scouring, bleaching, mercerizing, dyeing printing, and finishing, which contribute heavily to pollution loads. 12 refs.
