This history of linen is outlined and the traditional difficulty associated with dyeing it is noted. The cultivation of flax and the preparation of flax fibre prior to yarn production (pulling, retting, breaking, scutching and hackling) are described. The composition and physico-chemical characteristics of linen are presented as are its reactions to alkalis, acids and oxidants. The problems associated with dyeing linen are outlined and the procedures required to prepare linen for dyeing are described for 1/8 white linen. Points to consider when dyeing linen with direct, reactive, vat and sulphur dyes are raised. Types of finishing are discussed: classical 'soft hand', wrinkled.
