Researchers from the Waste Minimization Center of the University of Tennessee performed a waste minimization assessment for a vertical textile mill devoted to the manufacture of prewashed denim jeans. At the time of analysis, the mill had an annual production cpacity of 7 million pairs of jeans. The waste minimization assessment discovered that washing machines and chemical tumbling equipment generated the most waste effluent, and that the installation of a relatively inexpensive wastewater treatment system within the mill building itself would significantly reduce effluent levels. A review of the waste minimization assessment includes tables that specify the pollution generating capacity of various finishing systems, the initial costs of recommended wastewater treatment devices, and extrapolated 'payback' times for each recommended device that were calculated from normalized profit trends.
