Developments in the use of modified starches in the processing of textiles are reviewed. To achieve specific end uses, starches are sometimes subjected to various modifications, carried out sequentially. The major physical and chemical modifications are described. New derivatives of starch with hydrophobic groups, prepared by phase-transfer catalysis and grafting, are recommended for use with synthetic fibres and fabrics.
