Researchers examining solvent assisted dyeing of acrylic fibers analyzed the correlation between dyeing behavior and the solubility parameter values of monoazo disperse dyes, acrylic fibers, and benzyl alcohol solvent. Results indicated that the association solubility parameter values of the dyes, fibers, and solvent showed a definite correlation with such dyeing characteristics as equilibrium dye uptake and the acceleration factor of benzyl alcohol. Disperse dyes having association solubility parameter values closer to those of acrylic fibers exhibited higher dye uptake. Dyes having association solubility parameter values closer to those of benzyl alcohol exhibited a lower accelerating factor. There was no correlation of total solubility parameter values of dyes and fibers. No correlation was observed between the dispersion solubility parameter values of dyes, fiber, and benzyl alcohol and either equilibrium dye uptake values or the acceleration factor. 19 refs.
