An experiment chargacterized the effect of optical brighteners and surfactants on the colorfastness of dyed cotton fabric samples during extensive washing. Prior to the experiment, samples were dyed with C.I. Reactive Yellow 7, C.I. Reactive Orange 4, C.I. Reactive Red 8, C.I. Reactive Red 11, C.I. Reactive Blue 4, C.I. Reactive Blue 82, C.I. Reactive Blue 163, and C.I. Reactive Violet 1. Washing agents included nonionic detergents, alcohol-based neutral detergents, and highly ionic sodium carbonate-based soaps. Spectrophotometric color measurement instruments revealed little difference in shade among samples that had been washed in the various surfactants. Samples washed in the presence of optical brighteners, however, exhibited significant changes in their spectral profiles. In general, the use of optical brighteners improved the appearance of lightly colored pastel shades, but degraded that of deeply saturated shades. 4 refs.
