The use of ozone to decolorize dyeing and finishing effluents dramatically improves the biodegradability of textile mill waste streams. The powerful oxidizing potential of ozone--it ranks just below fluorine as the second most active oxidizing agent--derives from its unstable dipolar structure. A review of ozone treatment processes in use at downstream waste treatment centers throughout the United States focuses on molecular ozonation, electrophilic ozonation, and free radical ozonation through ultraviolet irradiation. Tables and graphs detail the results of a five week trial conducted at various dyehouses and finishing plants in the southeastern United States, in which ozonation was employed to treat aqueous mixtures of direct, disperse, cationic, reactive, and sulfur dyes, as well as wetting agents and detergents.
