Surface waters contain such natural colorants as humic acid, humates, tannins, decaying plankton, and microscopic aquatic plants. Dyehouse effluent usually contains suspended dyes, which often deepen or change the color of surface waters. Aside from their inherent toxicity to humans, suspended dyes can be aesthetically unpleasing and inhibit photosynthesis by adversely impacting biochemical oxygen demand. A review of methods for the decoloration of dyehouse effluent focuses on color measurement methods that have been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency, United States national, state, and municipal limits on color in textile finishing discharges, waste minimization strategies, aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment systems, chemical treatment systems, filtration, ozonation, and irradiation. 24 refs.
