Researchers investigated the decolorization of four reactive dyes with an azo or anthraquinone group and wastewater from desizing, printing, and winch dyeing operations using microorganisms under anaerobic conditions. The reactive dyes with the azo group were effectively decolorized. The mechanism of decolorization was probably the reductive cleavage of the azo bond. The decolorization rate increased in the presence of organic nutrients, such as desizing wastewater. The decolorization of wastewater from printing and winch dyeing operations was comparable to that of the reactive dyes with the azo group. For artificial wastewater made from a solution comprising 70 percent reactive dyes and 30 percent desizing wastewater, 85 percent decolorization and 65 percent chemical oxygen demand were achieved using an anaerobic - aerobic continuous process. 17 refs.
