The addition of cationic precipitants facilitates the decoloration of effluents containing reactive dyes. The behavior of these precipitants in dyebath effluents containing nonionic and/or anionic dyes, however, is not well understood. Researchers added a cationic polymer precipitant with quaternary ammonium chloride groups and a molecular mass of 17,000 to an effluent containing three anionic substances: sodium alginate, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and the sodium salt of methylene bis-naphthalene sulfonic acid. After filtration, a Spekord M 40 spectrophotometer evaluated the color of the solutions. The spectra indicated effective decoloration of disperse dye solutions in the concentration range from 0.05 to 1.0 gram per liter. 16 refs.
