Researchers employed activated charcoal to decolor various aqueous dye solutions, including acid (Sandolan Rhodamine E-B and Sandolan Blue E-BL), direct (Direct Green XBN and Direct Congo Red), metal complex (Lanasyn Grey 2 BLI, Vitrolan Orange G, and Omega Chrome Bordeaux BR), vat (Novatic Brown BR and Novatic Golden Orange 3G), basic (Astrazon Red-Violet 3R and Astrazon Blue BG), and reactive (Remazol Violet 5R). The pH of the buffer solutions ranged from 3.1 to 11.5. Dye concentrations ranged from 10 to 100 milligrams per liter. A Spectronic 20D spectrophotometer assessed the adsorption performance of the activated charcoal sorbents. Results showed that as the dye concentration increased the adsorption percentage decreased. Increases in charcoal loading increased the adsorption percentage. The pH of the buffer solution strongly influenced the adsorption percentage, with maxima occurring at pH 3.1. 4 refs.
