Scientists investigated the decoloring of effluent containing direct dyes using flocculation and flotation. The analysis utilized a pressure expansion flotation decoloration plant developed by the Denkendorf Institute for Textile and Processing Technology. Flocculation with metal hydroxides utilized organic polymer auxiliaries. The tests demonstrated that flocculation combined with flotation is an effective technique for decoloring and purifying effluents containing direct dyes. Combinations of the flocculants K1/K3 and K2/K3 yielded similar and good results. The K1/K3 combination produced larger and more floatable flocs. Dyeing with 100 percent recycled water or water with a 50 percent recycled content increased the depth of shade compared with the depth of shade obtained when dyeing with 100 percent tap water. 12 refs.
