Part Three in a series of articles on the EcoSwat exhaust dyeing of cotton continues with a discussion of soaping, softening, and finishing. To facilitate the complete removal of dye residues in the soaping bath, Sandoz has developed Sandopur RSK Liquid, which sequesters alkalies present in the soaping bath and facilitates the desorption of the hydrolysate to prevent it from being redeposited on the fabric. Sandopur RSK Liquid can be readily eliminated from effluent by wastewater treatment plants, where it is totally adsorbed on the sludge. A variety of softeners and finishing agents can be employed during EcoSwat processing, depending on the material being processed--knit fabrics, woven fabrics, or yarns. In general, softeners are applied for 20-30 minutes at 30-40 degrees centigrade. Higher temperatures are not recommended to ensure stability.
