The first in a series of articles on water consumption patterns in textile mills reviews techniques developed by ATIRA to monitor and reduce water consumption and to recycle water in wet processing systems. Major water consuming machines in textile mills include kiers, washing machines, mercerizing machines, and jiggers. Water conservation measures for continuous machines include counter flow arrangements, reduced flow rate, matching low rate to fabric, turning off the water flow when the machine stops, and replacing old machines include avoiding underloading, overfilling, and running rinses; matching filling to load; reducing the number of process stages; transferring processes to more economical machines; and replacing old machines. Wash water from the final wash, wash water following the peroxide boil, and cooling water used for air compressors can be reused without any treatment.
