Environmental regulations are increasingly mandating the decolorization of wastewater prior to discharge. General industrial methods of wastewater decolorization iclude pretreatments and biological treatments. Methods specifically used to decolorize textile wastewater include adsorption, chemical precipitation and flocculation; oxidation via chlorine, peroxide, electrolysis, and ozone treatments; reduction; electrochemical treatments; and ion pair extraction. Ion pair extraction with long chain aliphatic amines in an acid medium is an effective process to treat wastewater that contains anionic compounds. It is applicable to the selective removal of dyes that contain anionic groups, which include acid, direct, metal complex, and reactive deys. The major advantages of this method are the simplicity of the liquid-liquid phase separation and the low energy consumption.
